We are committed to working with you and your child to manage your child’s pain. We believe that managing pain is an important part of your child’s care. Pain is a part of life and is the body’s way of responding to an injury, illness or stress. Untreated pain leads to anxiety, fear, irritability or fatigue and may cause children to act in immature ways. It may also interfere with a child’s eating, sleeping and the healing process. When pain is controlled, children sleep better, can be more active and get well faster. Children may not be able to say how much pain they are having because they are too young, too sick or too afraid to tell caregivers. Parents are the best resource for helping caregivers know how their child reacts to pain and what ways work to manage it. You and your child have a right to have his/her pain managed effectively. Your caregiver will work with you to set a goal for the level you would like your child’s pain to be maintained and what medications are available. The caregiver will use simple explanations so both you and your child understand the treatment prescribed. You will leave with the confidence of knowing how to manage your child’s pain effectively. It is important to know that with the treatments available today, most pain can be well controlled no matter the type and amount of pain your child may feel.
