- Share with your caregivers what methods have worked for your pain in the past.
- Let your caregiver know as soon as pain occurs. The best time to manage pain is when it first begins. Don’t wait for the pain to get worse before asking for pain medication.
- If you know your pain worsens with activity, ask for medication before the activity to prevent the pain.
- Let your caregiver know how your pain medications are working.
- Do not be afraid of taking pain medications or becoming "addicted" to them. Controlling your pain is important to your recovery. In fact, studies show that drug addiction for the purpose of pain management is rare.
